Ex-Inter President Massimo Moratti: “An Impossible Rift Had Been Created Between The Club & Antonio Conte”

Massimo Moratti has offered his thoughts on the departure of Antonio Conte as head coach of Inter, suggesting that the Italian tactician could not have stayed on with the Nerazzurri due to circumstances.

The former Inter president was full of praise for the accomplishments of the Italian and the impact that he had at the Giuseppe Meazza, but sees the volatile situation around the club as having been untenable for Conte,

Moratti suggests that Conte’s situation at the club was untenable and there was never a realistic chance that the Nerazzurri would be able to convince the talismanic manager to remain.

Conte’s exit came after delivering the first scudetto to Inter than the club has achieved since 2010, but the outspoken manager decided to depart weeks after clinching the title due to disagreement over transfer policy brought about by Inter’s financial objectives.

Inter made clear to Conte that at least one major squad player would have to be sold to generate capital gains and that no major new signings would be coming in.

Moratti gave his thoughts: “Between [Conte] and the club, an impossible rift had been created.”

“Conte, however, was important, he made the team take a big step forward and made it more aware of its strength and assured in its abilities.”

“Under him the team acquired a great personality.”
