Former Inter manager has praised Inter defender Alesandro Bastoni after the 22-year-old’s impressive showing for the Azzurri in Sunday’s Group A clash with Wales.

Speaking in an interview published in yesterday’s edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian coach gave a positive review to the defenders in Italy’s squad, singling Bastoni out for special attention.

The veteran tactician, most recently of Sampdoria but also known for his spell on the sidelines with Inter, Roma, Chelsea, and his Premier League win with Leicester City among others, was impressed with Italy’s defensive prowess throughout the tournament, with the Azzurri keeping a clean sheet in all three of their group stage games.

After not appearing in either of the first two group stage games, Bastoni slotted into the backline for Sunday’s encounter, where he looked comfortable and composed despite his young age.

Ranieri gave a very positive assessment of the Nerazzurri defender’s present qualities and future alike, saying the following:

“[Italy’s] defense has not conceded a goal yet, and this is is one aspect that makes the team comfortable. Good from Emerson Palmieri and the almost-rookie Rafael Toloi, and great from Bastoni – he will be Chiellini’s heir.”
