It has been announced that the video assistant referee will intervene more regularly in Serie A next season than it did in 2020/21, according to a report in the Italian print media.

As has been reported by Corriere dello Sport, the first meeting with the new chief of referees, Gianluca Rocchi, ended with the clear intention to use VAR much more regularly when evaluating penalty calls.

There will also be a much heavier focus on the attacking possession phase, which means the VAR referee will be examining every element of an attacking move that then led to a potential penalty or disallowed goal.

So if Romelu Lukaku is fouled in the box, but it becomes clear that Nicolo Barella committed a foul as part of the same move, they will pull it back for that foul.

The authorities will also now be harsher on referees who make clear and obvious errors that the VAR then picks up on.
