For years the Inter Milan and AC Milan rivalry has been giving us great football. The intensity of the games was (and still is) like no other. Players bring their A-game to every derby.

Whether they meet in the Serie A or the Copa Italia the stakes are just as high. is very reflective of the high stakes when these two teams go head-to-head.

Three games have been selected for remembering in this piece. These games were very intense because the results had express or implied consequences on either team’s future in the relevant competition.

2021 Coppa Italia Quarterfinals

This game was sensational. What it lacked in goals it made up in suspense. The game was played at San Siro and was decided by a freekick in stoppage time by Christian Eriksen.

From the very beginning of the game till the end, neither set of players pulled their foot off the gas pedal. The game saw a total of 8 yellow cards, two of which resulted in the sending off of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Speaking of the Swede, his clash midway through the second half with Romelu Lukaku is now part of Milan derby folklore.

Matchday 23, 2020/2021 Serie A Season

A pleasurable day for Inter indeed. They won this match 3-0 and solidified their position as leaders of Serie A. Although AC Milan took most of the ball possession, Inter were clinical in front of the goal with two goals from Lautaro Martinez and one from Romelu Lukaku to put the game away.

This game saw Inter go 4 points ahead of second-place AC Milan and tighten their grip on the pole position for the Scudetto.

The game was especially delightful for Inter fans because they were not favoured to win that match since they lost the first leg 2-1.

Inter were managed by coaching legend Antonio Conte.

Matchday 22, 2019/2020 Serie A Season

This game would forever live in our memories. The amazing six-goal thriller just after the mid-point of the season.
Things started with little or no eventful moments from either side until the 40th minute when Ante Rebic put AC Milan ahead.

Five minutes later former Inter striker Zlatan Ibrahimović made it 2-0. This was the result Inter were dreading initially but they showed no fear and came into the second half like a completely different team.

Marcelo Brozovic, the Inter midfielder opened the scoring for the team with a stunning left-footed shot. Two minutes later, Matias Vecino added a second for Inter and just like that the game was leveled.

AC Milan appeared stunned by the energetic football from Inter and it didn’t take too long for Inter to add another one. Stefan De Vrij, an unlikely scorer for the team put the ball in the back of the net from a picture-perfect corner from Antonio Candreva.

As expected AC Milan tried their best to rally a comeback but could not get one, instead Romelu Lukaku added to their woes with a sensational head off a cross by Nigeria’s Victor Moses.

As expected, tough matches mean tough tackles. There was a total of six yellow cards and even a red card for one of Inter’s coaching staff.

The Derby Della Madonnina has been and would always be football at its best, we look forward to many more entertaining matches in the next season.
