Comprehensive. That’s the only way to describe that season opening victory Inter Milan enjoyed over Genoa in match week 1.

Like Antonio Conte before him, Simone Inzaghi had his squad flying high and honestly should have had another 2 goal at minimum had it not been for a combination of bad luck and good goalkeeping.

After a summer of turmoil, it is unquestionably the kind of start that has cooled some of the concerns the fans have had.

But this is just the start. A win against Genoa, who Inter have dominated in recent years, was to be expected especially with the initial boost that comes from playing under a new manager.

Inzaghi has to now navigate a tough combination of integrating new players into his squad after the season has started while making adjustments for the inevitable injuries.

Upcoming Matches:

Hellas Verona FC vs FC Inter Milan, Friday August 27th, Stadio Marcantonio Bentagodi, kickoff 20:45 CET

First Team Fitness:

Lautaro Martinez: The Argentinian striker missed the season opener through suspension after accumulating too many yellow cards towards the end of last season, however he likely would have sat the match anyways after sustaining a minor psoas muscle strain.

There haven’t been many updated reports about his health, but there doesn’t seem to be much concern about his fitness for match week 2. Barring an unexpected set back expect the young talisman to start his first match of the season.

Alexis Sanchez: The Chilean midfielder has been struggling with a calf injury he picked up back on July 12th during the Copa America.

Unfortunately he seems set to miss another match for the Nerazzurri as he continues to recover. That he wasn’t called up by the national team for the upcoming international break all but signals there may be a little ways to go. He will have to be reassessed in several weeks

Roberto Gagliardini: Last week we went into detail about his medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury and his time table for return.

Unsurprisingly he remains unfit for this week’s match, however reports around the club suggest optimism about his prognosis and return.

Based on the seeming severity, we suggested last week that he would return between 2 to 4 weeks, with the latter seeming the more likely.

With the international break coming up, it seems likely he could be back in action for the club for match week 3. He will be reassessed in several weeks.
