Marc Overmars On Inter Target Andre Onana: “We Can’t Wait For Andre”

The sporting director of Ajax, Marc Overmars, has been discussing the future of Inter transfer target Andre Onana, according to a report in the Dutch broadcast media.

Speaking to the club’s official TV channel, Ajax TV, Marc Overmars explained that the club have been in repeated talks with the goalkeeper to see if he will renew his deal at the club but they have been unsuccessful.

“Never say never in football, but at the moment I don’t think it will happen anytime soon. We were very clear. We spent a lot of time negotiating to extend his contract, but it didn’t work out.”

He also explained that they gave the Cameroonian the space to find a move in the summer but it did not materialise. A move to Lyon seemed very close at one stage.

“Then we gave him the space to move in the summer and that didn’t happen either. Obviously, however, as a company, we have to look forward.”

Inter have been heavily linked as they need a long-term replacement for Samir Handanovic, but they want to wait until he is available for free in June 2022.

“We can’t wait for André. In the next winter market he could move, of course, but we would still have to find an agreement economic. Otherwise, he will leave in June on a free transfer.”

Samir Handanovic is now almost certainly in his final season of being the Inter number one, and none of the other goalkeepers in the squad look ready to take on the role.
