An Italian sports journalist has suggested that Inter can do better in the Champions League this season than they did in the previous attempt, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.
Speaking during Sky Sport24, as reported by FcINternews, Matteo Marani explained that Inter can at least reach the second round of the UEFA Champions League this season, rather than finishing last in their group like they did last season.
“In my opinion, they can do more in the Champions League, at least reach the second round.”
Matteo Marani cites the fact that Simone Inzaghi managed to get his Lazio side into the last 16 in the 2020/21 Champions League, but they were unlucky to come up against a very good Bayern Munich team.
“Last year Inzaghi got there with Lazio, but now he has an unpredictable group. But honestly, it must also be said that last year Inter did not perform very well, especially in the matches with Shakhtar Donestsk. There was not too much luck.”
Speaking more broadly about Inter’s hopes for the season, Matteo Marani suggested that Simone Inzaghi could do what Massimiliano Allegri did when he took over from Antonio Conte at Juventus, and take the team even further.
“I think that Inter is giving excellent response after the summer doubts. Now I wonder metaphorically: Inzaghi may be the new Allegri?
“Of course, I am referring to the passing of the baton from Conte as happened at Juventus.”
He finally added that people may have been too quick to write Inter off this season.
“Maybe Inter were too hastily given up on after disintegration, they could be a surprise.”
