Legendary former Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero believes that Inter will be able to do well in the Champions League despite the losses they suffered in the summer transfer market.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in yesterday’s print edition, the former striker gave the view that the experience provided by former Roma striker Edin Dzeko in particular can be important in Europe’s top competition for the Nerazzurri.

Inter did not enjoy their Champions League campaign last season, with the Scudetto-winners having finished bottom of their group, failing to progress to the knockout round of the competition for the third season in a row.

With the departures of Antonio Conte, Achraf Hakimi, and in particular striker Romelu Lukaku many would predict that it will be even more difficult for the Nerazzurri to escape the group stage in this season’s edition.

However, Del Piero sees the streetwise qualities of this season’s squad as potentially being enough to guide them to the desired progression to the round of sixteen.

“Inter are less strong in an absolute sense without Lukaku,” he explained, “but this is a great squad with more experience, awareness of their qualities. If Dzeko has a season up top, he can become decisive in the Champions League.”
