The news hit as most of us were undoubtedly browsing through Zamsino for the best odds of Lukaku being the top scorer this season. He was going back to England!

Romelu Lukaku, Inter Milan’s best hope of retaining the Scudetto, was headed to the same club that handled him around like a hot potato a few years ago.

Now that we’ve calmed down and accepted that the most prolific striker from last season is indeed wearing a different type of blue, he has already scored for them; it’s time to look at Inter Milan’s life after Rumaro Lukaku. There’s plenty of life yet at the San Siro.

Lautaro Martinez

Thankfully, the club managed to hold on to Argentine ace Lautaro Martinez mainly due to that £90 million price tag. Martinez is a proven goalscorer and will be more than important in Inter Milan’s quest to retain the league title.

Martinez, who turned 24 on the 22nd of August, is a perfect reason for us to look for the best odds on him ending up as the season’s top goal scorer.

The Argentine is an excellent bet to add at least 12 goals to the 17 he tallied last season. He’s more than an able replacement for Lukaku.

Having played more than 130 games for the Nerazzurri, Martinez is now a potential club legend in the making, and a lot will rest on him. Negotiations are underway for him to extend his contract beyond the June 2023 expiry date.

Edin Dzeko Coup

Jose’ The Special One’ Mourinho has said he was surprised to see Edin Dzeko leave Roma for Inter Milan. This coup will go a very long way in filling the goal-scoring gap left by Lukaku.

Dzeko has already started rattling in the goals and will continue to chip in with more than his fair share. The 35-year old scored one goal and assisted in another on the occasion of his 200th Serie A game against Genoa.

The only other player to do what Dzeko did on debut for Inter Milan, besides fellow debutant Hakan Calhanoglu, is the icon, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, back in 2006.

We all know what Zlatan achieved with Inter, so the omens are good a repeat from Edin.

The experience brought by Dzeko will help the entire team, especially the other recruits and those promoted from the junior ranks.

Strength And Depth In Midfield

We’ve already mentioned the new signing Hakan Calhanoglu, who has already endeared himself to the Inter Milan fans. The 27-year old Turk has been quoted as saying, “We will do everything to make the fans happy.”

Goals from the midfield are a vital cog in the success of any club, and if Calhanoglu keeps the form he showed on his first game of the season, then life after Lukaku will be more than liveable.

Inter signing Hakan from AC Milan for free is more icing on the cake than any Inter fans could have ever hoped for. He’ll be critical for the club after the loss of talented Achraf Hakimi.

There’s plenty of depth now in the Inter Milan midfield positions. Arturo Vidal, Stefano Sensi, Matias Vecino and Ivan Perisic are in the prime of their careers, while Marcelo Brozovic and Nicolo Barella are the rocks on which the club is built.

The Future Looks Bright

There’s no need to look for a silver lining because there is no cloud. It looked as though the powers that be at Inter Milan had missed a beat in letting Lukaku go, but the sun is shining bright on the Nerazzurri.

Inter Milan has assembled a strikeforce that is more than capable of delivering another Scudetto and, dare we say it, go far in the UEFA Champions League.

You only have to look at young Martin Satriano’s statistics in the Inter Primavera to see that Inter means business.

Lukaku was a significant loss, but even bigger gains will be made in the future by Inter Milan.
