Edin Dzeko has played a hugely significant role in Simone Inzaghi’s Inter team this season, with the Bosnian as important to the manager’s success as Romelu Lukaku was to his predecessor’s.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who argue that Dzeko’s contributions this season have had a similar weight to Lukaku’s under previous head coach Antonio Conte.
Conte had gotten the best out of Lukaku in the pair’s two seasons together at the Giuseppe Meazza, but the Belgian’s shock departure in the summer led some to feel that Conte’s heir Inzaghi would struggle to rebuild the attack this campaign.
This has not been the case, with Inter top of the scoring charts in Serie A thanks in no small part to the six goals in seven games from Dzeko.
Apart from a poor outing against Shakhtar in the Champions League and a few big missed chances, Dzeko has been decisive for Inzaghi even when he hasn’t found the back of the net.
Few would have expected the 35-year-old to have anything close to the impact that Lukaku did, especially given his price tag which will only rise to €1.5 million in the event of Champions League qualification, but he Inzaghi has put his faith in the Bosnian and been rewarded with the kinds of performances that have been necessary to keep his team at a high level.
