Legendary former Inter striker Samuel Eto’o always had faith that the Nerazzurri would be able to win the Champions League in the 2009-10 season.

Speaking at the Trento Festival of Sport, as reported by FCInterNews, the Cameroonian opened up about how he always felt that the club had the qualities to win Europe’s top competition while he was there, and also spoke on the ambitions for this season’s Inter team who he praised.

Eto’o joined Inter in the summer 2009 from Barcelona as part of a deal which saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic go the other way, and he enjoyed a fully successful first season at the club, winning every major trophy with the club for an historic treble.

The striker had always believed that this would be possible to achieve with the Nerazzurri when he joined and was not surprised by the success.

“You may not believe me,” he said. “But ask [former Inter director Rinaldo] Ghelfi about when I signed the contract. There was a difference. Let’s put this as a goal , I said, and we will win the CL at the latest two years.”

He went on, “We had a team of fighters, good guys and a special coach who understood every player perfectly, who understood the Inter fans perfectly. And he combined everything in a perfect way.”

“When we look at the second leg against Barca, we needed the luck factor, and we had it,” he reflected. “Because we have given so much during the year and everything went very well there.”

And on this season’s Inter team, he suggested that there is definitely enough quality to win the Scudetto this campaign, but that it will not be easy and the team must fight for it.

“Of course Inter can win the league again, I hope,” he said. “They lost to Real Madrid at the last second, I saw the Champions League match at San Siro, it can happen, but we have a team that can compete and win. But you have to fight a lot.”
