An Italian journalist has made it very clear that he never thought Inter would not beat FC Sheriff on Wednesday night, according to a report in the Italian media.
Whilst writing for Corriere dello Sport, Ivan Zazzaroni explained that he could not understand how FC Sheriff had managed to take six point in the group stages before they faced Inter for the second time.
“Despite having seen all the games in the group, for ninety minutes and more I kept wondering how Sheriff had managed to take 6 points out of the 9 available.
“I tried asking around, suspecting that something had escaped me, but no one was able to give me a convincing answer.”
Ivan Zazzaroni went on to say that it felt more to him like he was watching a Serie B or Serie C side up against a Champions League team.
“In fact, more than a Champions League match, it seemed to me that I was attending a cup match between a big team and a newly promoted one from C to B. This is to say that only one team, Inzaghi’s, was seen on the pitch.”
Despite the clear gulf in quality, it took Inter until the 54th minute to take the lead and get themselves on the way to the all important victory. This was largely down to the missed chances of Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko.
“Only the imprecision of Dzeko and Lautaro allowed the wall raised by Sheriff to hold up for almost an hour.”
The journalist finally added that at no point during the game was he concerned that Inter were not going to come away with the three points.
“Never, I repeat never, have I feared that victory could be questioned. Also because the best possible Brozovic was at the centre of the game.”
