Despite a lengthy run without a goal for club or country, Inter striker Lautaro Martinez may have additional motivation to score when Argentina face Brazil on Tuesday.
As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Martinez is suffering an alarming goal drought and has not scored since 15 October, when he netted the winner in Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Peru.
Since then, Martinez has been unable to find the back of the net in Serie A and the Champions League for Inter, whilst he failed to trouble the scoreboard during Argentina’s 1-0 win over Uruguay on Friday.
However, a 2022 World Cup Qualifier against bitter rivals Brazil in San Juan has been suggested as the perfect motivation for the former Racing Club star to find his scoring touch again.
Martinez is averaging 2.7 shots per game at Inter this term, more than the 1.9 of fellow striker Edin Dzeko despite the Bosnian’s eight goals, and Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi will hope he returns to form ahead of crucial matches against Napoli and Shakhtar Donetsk.
