Inter CEO Beppe Marotta does not believe that allowing coaches to challenge VAR decisions should be a priority in Serie A.

Speaking to Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, Marotta gave the view that the most important aspect in the implementation of VAR should be consistency of decisions and the reduction of clear errors.

The Nerazzurri have been among the clubs in the Italian top flight to have had issues with VAR so far this campaign, with the penalty awarded to Juventus late on at the San Siro from which the Bianconeri equalized one of the main ones.

Several coaches and even club executives have spoken about the negative effects that they feel the officiating and in particular the usage of VAR has had on their seasons up to this point.

It is not immediately obvious what should be done to rectify these problems, but in Marotta’s view the answer is not to give coaches the ability to challenge the decisions.

“Reducing errors has always been the objective of VAR,” he said. “A process of development is underway which is showing results, but the system still needs to be perfected.”

He went on that “Giving a ‘call’ to coaches cannot be a priority. Precedence should be given to the uniformity of decisions across all situations that come up.”
