Inter Corporate CEO Alessandro Antonello believes that once Inter and AC Milan have completed construction on a new stadium in Milan then the Nerazzurri can become a force in Europe again.
Speaking to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb while attending the Gazzetta Awards, the executive stressed the importance of bringing the club up to speed with the top clubs on the continent with their stadium.
The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri have been pressing forward with their plan to build a new stadium to replace the San Siro in Milan, with their aim being to modernize their infrastructure and increase revenues.
This summer’s transfer window laid bare the financial disparities between Inter and some of their biggest rivals on the continental stage, with Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi sold to Chelsea and PSG respectively for big fees.
Antonello believes that once the new stadium is completed, the conditions will be in place for the Nerazzurri to match the financial might of Europe’s elite.
“We hope that the stadium project unveiled a year and a half ago can be completed,” he stated, “not just for the clubs but also for the city.”
“The next step is the decision on which project will be carried out,” he went on.
He continued that “We are counting on this project a lot, not just for the clubs returning to being competitive in Europe but also to revive the neighbourhoods and ensuring that it is a model which is respectful of the environment and greenery.”
“We hope that the process will be quick,” he went on, “so that we can give the city a new stadium.”
Of the working relationship with city rivals AC Milan on the new stadium, Antonello stated that “As always we are working together on this project, which has had us together for many years.”
“We have always shared a stadium,” he added, “and we have the skills to build a new stadium, we want to continue managing it together.”
