Inter wing0back Denzel Dumfries is really beginning to cement a place for himself with his form in recent weeks, and he has already written himself a place in the history books with his goal against Salernitana yesterday.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who note that the Dutchman’s goal was the Nerazzurri’s hundredth of the calendar year.
The Nerazzurri went into yesterday’s match just two goals off of their record for goals scored in a calendar year, exactly a hundred in 1950.
Ivan Perisic quickly headed home to break the deadlock and make it 99 in 2021, and it fell to Dumfries to apply the finish to a flowing team move to make it 2-0 and a hundred this year around the half-hour mark.
The Dutchman had already scored his first goal in an Inter shirt against Roma only a couple weeks ago, and he has been playing himself into form over the past few weeks.
The 25-year-old did not prove to be an instant hit at Inter after joining from PSV in the summer, but Matteo Darmian’s injury absence has given him an opportunity to get a run of games and show his quality on both sides of the ball.
The Dutchman has been rewarded for his goalscoring prowess and overall quality in the final third by equalling a major historical record, one which his team went on to surpass handily over the rest of the match.
