Legendary former AC Milan head coach Fabio Capello believes that Inter are capable of progressing from their Champions League round of sixteen tie against Liverpool.
Speaking to Italian news outlet Fanbage.it, the former coach gave his thoughts on the Nerazzurri’s chances against the Reds in addition to explaining the stylistic differences in their team compared to last season.
Liverpool will have been one of the last teams that Inter would have wanted to draw as opponents in the first knockout round of the Champions League.
The Reds look to be in blazing form this season, only three points off the top of the Premier League table and fresh off qualifying for the knockouts with six wins from six.
However, the Nerazzurri have been enjoying good form of their own, and Capello believes that they have the capability of getting the better of the English side if they give it a go.
He described the tie as “A very difficult matchup, but I think they have a team that can create problems for Liverpool.”
“I see it as a game with everything to play for,” he went on. “Simone Inzaghi will have to study his opponent very well, they can be very difficult to play against.”
Of the Nerazzurri’s stylistic evolution under Inzaghi compared to Antonio COnte, Capello stated that “There is one thing that must be highlighted immediately: the intelligence of the two coaches.”
“Conte highlighted the strength of his team, which had very fast players before he left,” he explained. “He had every reason to be able to play this way because it created big problems for opponents.”
He continued that “Simone Inzaghi has players with different characteristics. Dzeko cannot play quickly on the break, so Inzaghi built everything on a foundation that already worked effectively in midfield and defense.”
