Former Siena coach Massimo Maddaloni believes that Inter’s form so far this season has surpassed even the level that they showed last time around.

Speaking to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, the coach praised the Nerazzurri’s performances across the campaign so far and suggested that they even compare favourably to their own form to win the Scudetto.

The Nerazzurri were twelve points clear at the top of the table at the end of last campaign, demonstrating imperious form to win their first Scudetto in over a decade.

There was uncertainty as to whether the team would be able to sustain the same level this time around based on their difficult summer, but based on the first half of the season this has not been a problem.

Inter are on 46 points after the first round of fixtures in Serie A, five better off than they were at this point last season, and Maddaloni feels that they’ve become a better team in the process.

“They sent mixed messages after the summer, in that at first many said that they would struggle without Conte, but now they are perhaps even better than last year,” he said.

“History tells us that all the coaches who come after Conte can find a better way to face the season,” he went on, “given that they find themselves working with a team that already has a clear identity.”

“Giving the team more freedom to play makes them even better,” he continued.

Maddaloni named Inter as Scudetto favourites “Because the quality of the players is showing through, they have a good squad, the players believe and are enjoying themselves.”
