When Alexis Sanchez sealed his free transfer move from Manchester United to Inter Milan, many fans of the Italian giants were hopeful that the club had secured the signing of a player who could recapture the form he demonstrated on numerous occasions while playing for Arsenal a few years earlier.

After joining the Red Devils in January 2018, the Chilean International was lauded as the greatest Chilean player of all time but there is no doubting that his time spent in Manchester was an ultimate failure. Fans of Inter Milan are yet to see his evident quality consistently either.

As such, recent reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport suggest that the reigning Serie A champions could have finally run out of patience with Sanchez as they look at alternative options in the January transfer window, namely Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette.

Sanchez has arguably shown more in Milan than he ever did in Manchester, though. He played his part in Inter’s title win last campaign, scoring seven goals in 30 appearances, which went some way to helping Inter put an end to its 10-year trophy drought and Juventus’ nine-year Scudetto winning cycle.

Despite this, his €7 million-a-year salary hasn’t been justified on the whole.

The Chilean is under contract until June 2023 too and has fallen out of favour with new manager Simone Inzaghi, even taking to social media to vent his frustrations in a post which featured a Ferrari marooned in the sand with the accompanying text reading: ‘Realise that you can be worth a lot, but if you are in the wrong place, you are not going to shine.’

That sort of outburst will fail to win over Simone Inzaghi in particular and highlights the rather depressing decline of a player who was wowing audiences during his time at Arsenal.

Since then, Alexis Sanchez has struggled to find a suitable home and hasn’t managed to nail down a regular starting place at any of his new clubs.

His lacklustre displays and scrutiny around his fitness are hard to disregard considering the huge wages he is on at Inter Milan.

As such, before the club can even consider bringing in a talent like Alexandre Lacazette, the Chilean and his wages need to be offloaded.

Highlighting his drop in reputation, Sanchez has been recently linked with a move back to Spain in the shape of Sevilla, Valencia, Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano.

Sanchez is currently best priced at 5/1 on several betting sites to move to Sevilla during the January transfer window.

It’s in La Liga with Barcelona where he has shone previously too, eventually earning his move to Arsenal in the process.

Those performances live long in the memories of the aforementioned clubs who are chasing Sanchez, but there is no doubting that he is a player which comes with a great deal of risk attached when you consider his career since 2018.

Alexis Sanchez was once a formidable opponent who could unlock defenses and win matches on his own. Sadly, though, those days appear to be long gone as we continue to witness the sorry state a once prestigious talent is now in.
