Legendary former Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi believes that Romelu Lukaku owes a lot to Inter and to former coach Antonio Conte for getting his career back on track.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, Tacchinardi suggested that the Belgian should thank his former coach for where he is today.

Lukaku joined Inter from Manchester United in the summer of 2019 for a significant fee, and there were questions around whether the striker had the quality needed to make a real impact after his inconsistent form with the Manchester club.

Rather than looking inconsistent, however, the Belgian became a real driving force for the Nerazzurri, leading Serie A in combined goals and assists on the way to the Scudetto with his club.

The 28-year-old left for Chelsea in the summer, though in a recent interview he has expressed regret at having left the Nerazzurri.

Tacchinardi finds it to be a regrettable aspect of modern football that a player such as Lukaku left in the first place rather than staying at a club where he fit in well.

“I’m a bit tired of seeing this kind of attitude,” he said. “Once there were club icons, but today it doesn’t seem to matter much to most people.”

He went on that “The most important thing in football now is earning money.”

“I think Lukaku should thank the manager who helped him grow,” Tacchinardi continued. “Before Antonio Conte, Lukaku was struggling wherever he went, which he seems to be once again.”
