Legendary former Inter striker Sandro Mazzola believes that Inter should consider areas of need in the transfer market only after seeing how the squad performs through January.

Speaking to Italian news outlet L’Interista, the 79-year-old gave the view that the Nerazzurri should based their January transfer business, if any, on what they see in the first few matches back from the winter break.

Inter and the rest of the clubs in Serie A have an opportunity to strengthen their squads this month, though it is far from a foregone conclusion that the Nerazzurri will take advantage.

The squad has looked adequate to the challenges of the first half of the campaign as coach Simone Inzaghi has gotten the needed results while making full use of his squad.

However, things could change quickly with a difficult and packed set of fixtures on the way, and Mazzola believes that the team should only make final decisions on their transfer business once they know more.

“Personally I would wait to see how things go in the first few matches in January,” he stated, “including on a fitness level, and then evaluate what the areas of need and the opportunities may be.”

“In short, these matches will be important for evaluating whether improvements are needed,” he went on, “because from the first half of the season I think we can be satisfied with the performances from everyone in the squad.”

Mazzola stated that “It’s too early to say whether January and February will be decisive, but they will certainly tell us a lot.”

“The head-to-head clashes are almost always decisive in the end, and Inter must face many in quick succession,” he elaborated. “It’s a massive period that will have to be approached in the right way if the team is to escape unscathed.”
