Legendary former Inter striker Sandro Mazzola believes that former Nerazzurri striker Romelu Lukaku is finally giving his real feelings about his departure from the club over the summer.

Speaking to Italian news outlet L’Interista, the 79-year-old suggested that Lukaku was only being honest about the circumstances of his move away when he spoke about regretting a move to Chelsea in a recent interview.

Lukaku left the Nerazzurri for a blockbuster fee to join Champions League holders Chelsea in a move that rocked the Nerazzurri late in the summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old had enjoyed a good relationship with the Nerazzurri supporters, while he had always spoken positively of his experiences at the Giuseppe Meazza, but in the end he sought a new challenge after helping the club to the Scudetto.

However, as his candid recent remarks show, the Belgian has had many second thoughts about whether the move was the right one, and for Mazzola this is nothing more than an admission of what many already suspected.

“I’d say he’s just started being honest,” the former striker said. “He said things that everyone already thought, albeit with some time to think about it.”

And on whether he would accept a return to Inter for the Belgian, Mazzola stated “Of course – he would first have to apologize to those who he owes an apology to, but then he could return and continue to help us win.”

“There wouldn’t be much discussion about it,” he added with a laugh.
