Former Inter goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca has claimed that Andre Onana will not become Inter’s first choice goalkeeper straight away, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.
Speaking during an interview on Sky Sport recently, via FCInter1908, Gianluca Pagliuca was full of praise for Samir Handanovic who has found some consistency after a very rough patch in goal for Inter.
“Handanovic is still a very good goalkeeper, he is doing very well. Honestly, he made some mistakes at the beginning of the season, but now he’s very continuous, he’s been unbeaten for more than 500 minutes, and in my point of view he’s still good. If before he saved from 10, now he does it from 8-8.5, and that’s enough for a great team like Inter.”
Many fans are ready for the Slovenian to be replaced and it seems that the club is too. Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana will arrive on a free transfer in the summer once he leaves Ajax and is expected to become the number one goalkeeper at the club.
According to Gianluca Pagliuca though, it may not be as simple as that for the new goalkeeper. He does not feel he will immediately oust Samir Handanovic. He feels that there will be a more gradual handover of the number one spot at Inter.
“The arrival of Onana? I agree with it unless it causes chaos as is happening at Paris Saint-Germain with the Keylor Navas-Donnarumma dualism.
“I don’t think Onana will immediately become first choice: Handanovic will start, maybe he will play a little in the league and a little in the Italian Cup, then slowly he will be gradually inserted as a holder.”
