Does Inter Have The Best Defense In Italy?

After an entire decade, Inter Milan is finally back at the top of the pecking order in Serie A. Despite having an excellent scoring record, much of their success has to be credited to their stellar defence.

With an average age of 26.0, Inter has the reputation of a very well-balanced team. The appropriate mixture of youth and experience has made them the best Italy.

The whole Inter Milan FC organisation deserves credit for the much-needed revival, but today’s accolades are reserved explicitly for the backline. Inter’s backline has had to put in the shift to contribute to the results we all now enjoy.

Using a 3-man backline is not without its problems, but Inter appears to be handling this tactical approach better than most clubs in Europe.

Defence is a team job, no one is left out, and Inter exemplifies this. You would often see strikers tracking back immediately when they are out of possession and making sure that the team’s stellar defensive shape is maintained.

Occasionally, they appear slightly stretched, especially on the counter-attack, but adjustments are made immediately—no man slacks when Inter defends.

A good defence is never the focal point of football games like goals are. The Nerazzurri’s defenders stop goals — and score goals.

The most recent match against Lazio saw two of their three centre backs on the scoreboard, with Inter conceding only one goal.

Now, if you’re a betting man (or woman), you don’t want to go up against Inter’s defence. Whether you’re an English, Italian or Danish fan, a betting guide will always give you the heads up on important stuff to note.

Arguments could be made that the attack of some Serie A clubs offers little or no pressure, but that is untrue. Objectively speaking, keeping teams with special attacks like Juventus and AC Milan to one goal in a game is simply brilliant.

Inter are currently on an eleven game unbeaten, six-game win streak and have conceded just one goal in their last six games. This for sure makes them the best defence in Italy.

Despite starting the season shakily, they have managed to pick themselves up and have created a system for champions. Simone Inzaghi has stepped into his position as Inter manager, despite low expectations from certain people, saying he is no Conte.

Aside from being the best in Italy, the Nerazzurri currently have the sixth-best defence in Europe, closely behind PSG, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

How Do Inter’s Defence Win Games?

The 3-man backline that Inter uses mixes height and positional awareness. Bastoni is quite tall, and that’s why he wins a lot of aerial battles.

The same analysis holds with De Vrij. It is then made better with Škriniar’s experience and confidence on the ball or off the ball in 1v1 situations.

With the three brilliant defenders and an incredible goalkeeper, the remaining seven players are given more attacking liberty.

The wingbacks push up higher and cause more problems for the opposition by dominating the midfield. They even have the option of using fast-paced midfielders like Ivan Perisic as a wingback when the situation calls for it just because they can and because it works.

Conclusion

With extra players in the midfield pushing forward, more goals come in. It is no surprise that the Nerazzurri are averaging 2.56 goals a game at the midway point of the season.

More so, their control over the game increases match to match. The Nerazzurri are just like any good skyscraper, built on a solid foundation so they can touch the sky.
