Former Inter midfielder Hernanes feels regret about his famous backflip goal celebration against his former club Lazio when he was a Nerazzurri player.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster RadioSei, the Brazilian explained that he had not meant any insult to the Biancocelesti’s fans with the gesture but rather was expressing his frustration with Lazio owner Claudio Lotito.

Hernanes joined Inter from the Biancocelesti in January of 2014, and he developed a penchant for scoring against his former side, most famously netting the winning brace in a 2-1 away win at the Stadio Olimpico during the second half of the 2014-15 season.

The 36-year-old celebrated with a backflip, which angered the Lazio supporters who booed their former midfielder, but as he explained he felt unhappy with having offended his former fans.

For him, the ire was more aimed at Biancocelesti owner Lotito, whose contact regarding his departure from the Italian capital was not something he was happy with.

“That’s the only celebration I regret from my career,” he explained of the famous backflip, “I was angry with Lotito and I decided to celebrate by doing the somersault.”

“I immediately realized it had been a mistake when the Lazio fans started booing me for the rest of the match,” he continued, “but the celebration was not aimed at them but rather at the owner.”
