Pirelli CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera can still recall the impression made on him by watching legendary former Inter midfielder Luis Suarez score his first goal at the San Siro.

Speaking to Italian business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, the Pirelli executive spoke about the connection that he still feels with the club, extending from his childhood memories to the feeling of winning the treble.

Pirelli sponsored the Nerazzurri’s shirt for 26 years prior to the end of the partnership last summer, but as Tronchetti Provera explained, there is more to the connection than this.

The executive has been an Inter fan for all his life, and he still has vivid memories of the success at the club from different eras.

Suarez was one of the great Inter players of the European Cup-winning side from the 1960s, and one of the reasons why the Pirelli CEO has become such a passionate Inter fan from such an early age.

“At the age of ten I attended my first football match,” he explained, “a match between Inter and SPAL at San Siro.”

He went on that “I remember the debut of Luis Suarez a few years later, after he had just arrived at Inter from Barcelona.”

“It was evening,” Tronchetti Provera recalled. “He scored from forty metres and it just left everyone speechless.”

He explained that it gave him “A powerful feeling, comparable to the one I got many years later when we won the treble under my good friend Massimo Moratti.”
