Inter want to keep Samir Handanovic in the squad for at least one more season to compete with Andre Onana while the latter settles into his starting role.

This according to Italian news outlet Calciomercato.com, who report that the Nerazzurri will offer the captain a new deal and the chance to compete for the starting spot provided he accepts a reduction in his wages.

Onana is all set to arrive in the summer as the long-term successor to Handanovic, with the Nerazzurri having identified the Ajax keeper as their preferred solution for the position for some time.

However, this does not mean that the current starting keeper will be pushed out, and instead the club will offer him the chance to both back up and also continue to be a starting option while the Cameroonian adjusts to life at the Nerazzurri.

Whether the 37-year-old accepts the offer at reduced wages remains to be seen, but he will be offered a chance to compete for a starting role.
