Inter are planning to sign Sassuolo striker Gianlucaca Scamacca and have him settle in as an understudy to Edin Dzeko.

This according to Italian journalist Marco Barzaghi, who said on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia that the Nerazzurri plan to keep Dzeko in the squad for Scamacca to learn from.

Scamacca has emerged as the Nerazzurri’s priority signing in attack for the summer transfer window, as the club have identified him as having the right profile to take over from Dzeko in the long term.

The Bosnian has proved a successful signing since joining last summer, but will be 36 at the beginning of next campaign, and cannot be relied on for the longer-term future.

However, according to Barzaghi, the club still intend to have Dzeko in the squad for at least one more season in order for the incoming Scamacca to model his game after.

“He’ll be an alternative to Dzeko, as Onana will be to Handanovic,” he explained of the Nerazzurri’s intentions for Scamacca.

“There must be competition in all positions,” he continued. “Apart from Edin, Inter’s main centre-forward will be Scamacca, who will be given the chance to grow next to him.”

And on whether he expects Alexis Sanchez to depart in the summer, Barzaghi stated that “I don’t know yet, Lautaro, Sanchez and Correa are all in contention for the other attacking position.”

“Or maybe something else will happen as far as exits,” he went on. “Inter are in front for Scamacca, he would be a great investment.”
