Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi believes that Inter can start to run away in the Scuetto race should they take four points from their next two Serie A matches.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, Bergomi gave the view that the Nerazzurri can put real distance from their main rivals with results against AC Milan and Napoli.

Inter return from the international break by facing their two closest rivals in the Serie A table, first in the derby against the Rossoneri and then with a match away to Napoli.

Headed into these matches, Inter are four points clear of both rivals with a game in hand, but where they will be on the other side of them is unclear.

Results against both of their direct rivals, however, could be enough to see Inter develop and insurmountable lead.

“For Milan it will be a decisive derby,” Bergomi predicted, “even if there are another 14 matches left to go.”

“I think that if Inter managed to take four points between the derby and Napoli then they would be really hard to catch.”

Bergomi also gave his tactical predictions ahead of the derby, stating that “Inter have three very good defenders who must still remain compact and deny space in behind.”

“After the win over Empoli, with Inzaghi suspended, assistant coach Farris explained well how they were conceding too many counterattacks, and in fact the team has grown in this respect over the course of the season,” he went on.

He continued that “Milan have players who can play box-to-box, who can always change the tempo in an instance and cause big problems.”

“Obviously, attention will be needed on the right side, where Leao and Theo are (the latter absent in the first derby),” Bergomi added.

“The work of the wing-backs will also be vital,” he explained. “In general, I think it will be important for Inter not to go into it thinking they’re at an advantage and can cruise through it.”

“They must play as they have done up to now,” he emphasized, “trying to impose their own game and also defending man-to-man.”

“Inter are the team that brings the most players into the attack,” he went on, “between the strikers, the two wide players and the midfielders.”

On who should start on the right for Inter, he stated that “Darmian is more reliable on a defensive level, tactically he is a little more prepared than Dumfries, who has also grown a lot too.”
