Former Serie A referee Paolo Casarin believes that Marco Guida did an excellent job of officiating the Milan derby between Inter and AC Milan yesterday evening.

Writing in his column in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, the former referee suggested that Guida got the major decisions right and took charge of the match with authority.

Guida didn’t have too many decisions to make, although there was some controversy around his decision to wave play on in the buildup to Milan’s equalizer, and he also handed out a red card to Theo Henrnandez in the dying seconds.

However, in the view of Casarin, the official did a good job of keeping the tempo of the match at a good level and communicating with the players.

Casarin gave the view that “The match was hard-fought and nervous, with an Inter goal disallowed due to a Perisic offside.”

He went on that the match had a “Yellow card for Romagnoli, great saves from Maignan who can do nothing on Perisic’s shot in the 38th minute.”

“Guida was always in a good position to evaluate situations,” he added, “and several times he made decisions as to whether to whistle for tackles or let the play go on, and the players always seemed to agree with the referee’s decision.”

“However, there were sixteen fouls whistled in the first half,” the former referee pointed out. “Milan started the attack for their equalizer after a decision by the official.”

He also mentioned that there was a “Chaotic finale including a red card for Theo. The refereeing from Guida was worthy of a top international referee.”
