Legendary former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga feels that the Nerazzurri were the better side overall in yesterday’s derby defeat against AC Milan, but that they shot themselves in the foot for the result.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the 61-year-old emphasized that after looking to have been in control of the match, the Nerazzurri lost their composure to allow the Rossoneri to secure all three points late on.

The Nerazzurri had looked to be the more compact and purposeful side of the two city rivals during the first half yesterday, and for the initial stages of the second half.

However, Olivier Giroud scored twice in the space of a few minutes to turn the match on its head, both times taking advantage to some disorganized defending and individual errors by the Nerazzurri.

Inter will have to reflect on why a match in which they appeared to be the stronger side for long spells slipped away from them, and Zenga feels that they must point the finger at their own decisions.

“On the Rossoneri’s first goal there are six AC Milan players and three Inter players in the box,” he said, “and Romagnoli was like the central striker.”

“From there the match was gone from them,” he added. “Up to that moment there would have been nothing to say if the Nerazzurri had been 2-0 up, Maignan had been the best player on the pitch.”

Zenga went on that “This is not an easy period for Inter, they’re coming up against strong teams and a defeat like this should not cause them to change how they play or scare them, it should cause them to reflect on how they lost in the last twenty minutes and keep playing like they did in the first seventy minutes.”

“The result obviously always affects the final opinions,” he added.
