Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his team put in an excellent display in defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League but paid for their inability to score.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the coach praised his team and gave the view that they had put in their most accomplished performance of the season considering the quality of the opposition.

Inter find themselves with a mountain to climb if they wish to overturn the 2-0 deficit at Anfield, and they’ll rue the chances they missed to take a better result and keep the tie in the balance.

However, there were many encouraging aspects of the performance that Inzaghi’s players put in, not least the spell at the beginning of the first half where they were in the ascendancy.

The coach is disappointed that they couldn’t turn the performance into a result, but still happy with how his team performed.

“I think we lacked the reward of a goal,” he said. “San Siro pushed us on from start to finish, and considering the opponent we were up against I can say that we played our best game of the season.”

“We must be aware of our strength,” he stressed, “Liverpool are one of the beast teams in Europe. I’m proud and I congratulated the team.”

“Football is made up of details,” he reflected, “but this match must give us belief, and great confidence for the future.”
