Ex-Inter Forward Antonio Cassano: “Dzeko & Lautaro Went Missing Against Liverpool, Alexis Sanchez Must Play More”

Legendary former Inter, Real Madrid, and Roma forward Antonio Cassano feels that the Nerazzurri’s strikers didn’t do enough against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Speaking on Christian Vieri’s Twitch channel, as reported by FCInter1908, he highlighted the lack of impact by Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko as a key reason for the defeat, and also gave the view that Alexis Sanchez should be relied on more in attack.

Neither the Nerazzurri nor the Reds created many dangerous opportunities in Wednesday’s match despite both teams having enjoyed a number of positive spells of possession.

However, Liverpool made the most of the chances that came their way, whilst Inter’s forwards were not able to capitalize on anything their teammates created for them up against the Reds’ impressive defense.

In the end, this lack of ruthlessness meant that the Nerazzurri not only didn’t score a goal but didn’t even manage a single shot on target, and for Cassano this was the fault of their starting pair of strikers.

“Congratulations to Inter,” he began, “they played a very good match. A great game with the exception, I hate to say it, of two players that I really like – Lautaro and Dzeko both played a match that was below their quality.”

“Inter built up well,” he added, “they played well, they played with great courage. But in the biggest matches you have to take advantage of the opportunities you come.”

“Lautaro has to score from the edge of the box,” he opined.

“Inter played a great game but Van Dijk didn’t seem like he was sweating, Liverpool seemed safe and calm,” he continued.

Cassano also gave the view that “I hope Sanchez finds more playing time. He’s doing better than the other forwards.”

“He has to play,” he said of the Chilean. “Obviously, Inzaghi has to make choices, but Sanchez has to play from the start.”
