Former Inter striker Christian Vieri feels that the Nerazzurri showed that they can mentally cope against a top side in their Champions League loss to Liverpool, but were let down by the finishing of their strikers.

Speaking on his Twitch channel, as reported by FCInter1908, Vieri gave the view that finishing was the decisive aspect of the match despite an impressive overall display by the Nerazzurri.

Inter knew going into the tie that they would be in for one of their biggest challenges of the entire season, given that they were facing a side who had won all six of their group stage matches in the competition.

In spite of this, the Nerazzurri looked fully ready to try and impose their game and enjoyed several very positive spells, particularly at the beginning of the second half.

In the end, however, the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko were not able to register a shot on target with any of the opportunities that fell their way.

“Inter played a good match,” Vieri said, “they play good football but when you get to certain levels like the round of sixteen you need luck and experience.”

He added that “Inter played well, they played their football which isn’t easy to do in Europe. They had a good game, it’s normal that if you want to win then you have to score with your half-chances, Lautaro has to score.”

“Inter could have scored but didn’t manage to finish their chances,” he added.

Of the second leg he said that “It will be tough playing there, even if they lose and go out, playing at Anfield will be an important experience. Whatever happens, it’s a good experience.”

Vieri concluded that “Inter showed great spirit and played a good game of football, but Lautaro and Dzeko struggled.”
