New Inter defender Robin Gosens has said that it was clear to him that moving to Inter was the best step for his career, according to a report in the German media yesterday.

Speaking during an interview with German news outlet 11Freunde, via FCInternews, the German defender spoke about the strong feelings that he has for his former club, Atalanta, and the city of Bergamo and its people.

He then explained that despite all of that, it was very clear to him that the right step was to accept the chance to move to Inter at this point in his career.

“Despite these strong feelings for the club and for the city, it was immediately rationally clear to me that the move to Inter was the right step for me at the right time. I grow at my best as a footballer when I have to face challenges and I have to overcome resistance, and it has been like this throughout my career.

“But you also need to see how certain routines develop over the course of your career. And the more I was in Bergamo, the better I felt. In the game I continued to do everything for Atalanta. But in training, a certain sloppiness crept up here and there because I was in my comfort zone and nothing could happen to me.

“And that’s not how you grow up. At Inter, on the other hand, I will face resistance and it will take me a long time to perform in front of 80 thousand spectators at San Siro.”

He joined the club at the end of the January transfer window with an injury which he is still recovering from.

He knows that he will have to get back up to speed and impress on the pitch before he can be fully accepted by the Inter fans.

“I will have to fight on the pitch in every training session and in every match to be able to recover my form, become a full part of the team and be accepted by the fans. I can’t rest, I can’t afford to make mistakes, and this will inevitably lead me to continue growing as a player.

“This is exactly the challenge I needed, which is why it is the right time to make the change. Of course, I can understand that Atalanta fans are totally angry and frustrated because another important player left his club for a historic rival.

“It still hurts my soul to receive hate mail accusing me of betraying my heart and the club I owe everything to. However, I hope every fan can understand my choice. Because in the end I’m an athlete who wants to get the most out of his career, and that includes winning as many titles as possible. Inter gives me the chance and I absolutely want to take it.”
