Italian journalist Carlo Genta believes that Inter can get back into form in the league with a win against city rivals AC Milan in the Coppa Italia.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the journalist gave the view that the Nerazzurri are currently low on confidence and self-belief in front of goal, and that a win against the Rossoneri in the semi-final first leg could help them out indirectly in Serie A.

The Nerazzurri go into the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg knowing that their form in the league is irrelevant to the one-off knockout match against their city rivals.

However, the match could be important in determining the team’s confidence and momentum going into the league fixtures that follow it.

As Genta emphasized, the players could get a boost in their Scudetto chase by proving to themselves and to their rivals that they are still in form with a good performance and result in the Coppa Italia.

“Goals matter,” he said, “my impression of Lautaro is that he’s having difficulties, this is a team that at the moment couldn’t even score with their hands, and it weighs on them.”

“It takes away your confidence and self-belief,” he added. “You play good matches but don’t take them home – in the first half of the season they put shots away, now they fail to. This takes away your confidence and puts pressure on you.”

He explained of the Coppa Italia matchup that “The derby will affect the league because for the team who get past this obstacle, it will be a lift for the run-in.”

“They seem to me to be two teams running low on confidence and self-esteem,” he explained. “And this derby can give it back to one of the two.”
