Italian journalist Maurizio Pistocchi feels that Inter have lost their sense of a coherent style of play under coach Simone Inzaghi.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Radio Punto Nuovo, he argued that the current coach has not had the team playing at the same standard as his predecessor Antonio Conte.

Inzaghi was brought in to take over the work of Scudetto-winner Conte during the summer, and despite the fact that the two coaches employ similar formations on paper, there are key differences in their approaches.

Whereas Conte tended to have clearly defined roles for the different players and positions, Inzaghi has shifted the team into a more fluid style of play on the pitch, with players linking up all over.

Pistocchi feels that the team has lost something in the transition and are no longer as formidable as they had been under Conte,

“The field of Inter had been tilled by a talented farmer, Conte, who managed to give strength and an identity that made Inter look like a machine,” he said.

“The choice of Inzaghi to replace Conte was not the right one,” he continued. “I’m not a great admirer of Inzaghi, in the collective game there need to be clear ideas and mechanisms need to be perfected.”

“Which doesn’t happen now,” he added, “Inter no longer has a tacitcal identity. This team improvises and struggles more. The midfielders run for a useless 40-50 minutes.”
