Former Inter, AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Roma defender Christian Panucci feels that the Nerazzurri showed that they are headed in the right direction with their 1-0 win over Liverpool yesterday evening.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, the 48-year-old noted that apart from the rash sending off of Alexis Sanchez which effectively put the tie beyond Inter, there was little that the team did wrong.
Inter reached the round of sixteen of Europe’s top competition for the first time in a decade this season, and they were given a baptism of fire facing one of the favourites in the form of Liverpool.
In the first leg, the Nerazzurri played well but suffered a 2-0 defeat, while in the second they did one better by travelling to Anfield and handing the Reds their first home defeat in over a year, though it wasn’t enough to go through on aggregate.
This was a sign of growth for the team, however, in the view of Panucci, and they can take heart from how they performed as they go again next season.
“The match was a good one from Inter,” he said, “I liked the performance from the Nerazzurri. They showed personality and quality to press Liverpool high, and also got a bit of luck.
“Then the red card to Sanchez held Inter back,” he went on. “In any case, the club is on the right path to return to the top.”
