Legendary former Fiorentina midfielder Giancarlo Antognoni feels that Inter’s fixture list in the remaining matches of the Serie A season can be a big advantage for them.
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, he argued that the Nerazzurri are favourites for the Serie A title based on the matches that they have left to play.
Inter, AC Milan, and Napoli have all shown that they have enough quality to perform at the level of Scudetto-winners over the course of the season so far, and all could conceivably get the points they need to go all the way over the final stretch.
However, apart from their own quality, the teams will also have to worry about the quality of the teams who they have left to face.
There are no straightforward matches in Serie A and Inter will be wary of the quality of the midtable and relegation-threatened teams who they have left to play, while they also must host an in-form Roma.
However, on paper at least, it would be hard to deny that the teams which the Rossoneri and the Partenopei must still face are more formidable in aggregate.
He argued that Napoli could fight for the title “Because they have an excellent squad, motivation, and the support from their fans.”
“All the fans push their team, but in Naples it’s a particularly big factor,” he added. “But if I look at the fixture list, Inter are the favourites, then Napoli and Milan are on par.”
