Inter striker Lautaro Martinez is a player who has come in for significant criticism for his form particularly in recent weeks, but over the past few matches he has answered his critics.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who argue that the Argentine has done much to silence his doubters with his recent form in front of goal.
Martinez has been Inter’s top goalscorer this season, but there has been an impression that he scores in bursts and is prone to long goal droughts especially when he is low on confidence.
This saw the 24-year-old come in for some criticism and doubt over his suitability for the team when a very bad patch of personal form coincided with the team’s worst run of results of the season in February and March.
However, after missing out on the team’s win over Hellas Verona earlier this month through suspension and then not starting the next match against Spezia, Martinez has given a convincing answer.
The striker came off the bench against Spezia and fired his team to their 3-1 win with a goal and an assist, and then followed it up with perhaps his best display of the season against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia.
In a massive must-win knockout match against the Nerazzurri’s city rivals, Martinez produced a first-half brace that gave the team their first derby win of the season to see off the Rossoneri and reach the final of the Coppa Italia.
The goals were only a part of Martinez’s excellent display against Milan, and he looked once again like a striker with confidence.
Against Roma yesterday evening, Martinez showed that he can be clinical, putting the seal on a 3-1 win with a well-placed header from a corner, and now the sense of doubt around his form seems far away.
