Legendary former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga feels that Inter could benefit from a quick resolution to this season’s Serie A relegation fight.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Zenga highlighted how if Sampdoria and Cagliari already know their fate when they face Inter, they may not have the same motivation to give the Nerazzurri a tough match.

Inter have five matches left to play, and while their remaining opponents are not the toughest on paper, there are no truly straightforward matches in Serie A, especially towards the end of the season when every last point can count.

Both Sampdoria and Cagliari have the quality to get a result against even a team as strong as the Nerazzurri, but it the status of the relegation race could be an important factor in determining their attitudes going into the matches.

If both know that they’re already safe, they may well prove to be less motivated opposition as Inter go in search of maximum points in their remaining matches.

“Everything’s working in Inter’s favour now,” Zenga said. “We’ll have to wait and see as far as the fixture list though – in the last two matchdays, Inter have to play against Cagliari and Sampdoria.”

“If the relegation fight were to already decided, that could help them a lot,” he explained.
