There were no grounds to disallow Inter’s first or third goals in their 3-1 win over Roma yesterday evening despite the protestations of Giallorossi players, according to Italian media.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport argue that match official Simone Sozza got it spot-on to allow both goals.

On Inter’s first goal, there was a hint of offside as Denzel Dumfries broke past the last man to latch onto a Hakan Calhanoglu through-ball and then slot it past Rui Patricio.

However, the Gazzetta note that Roma left-back Nicola Zalewski was playing the Dutchman on, and so after a quick check with the VAR to confirm this there was no reason to hold up play or not to award the goal.

Meanwhile, the Roma players appealed for fouls on Lorenzo Pellegrini and Chris Smalling in the area as the Nerazzurri scored their third goal through Lautaro Martinez from a corner in the second half.

However, as the Gazzetta notes, it was actually Giallorossi man Ibanez who impeded Smalling, whilst there was nothing in the tussle between Pellegrini and Dumfries, so it was correct for the goal to stand.
