Inter wingback Robin Gosens believes that the team are on track for the Scudetto and that their win over Juventus earlier this month is what got them in this position.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, the 27-year-old expressed confidence in the Serie A title, and also spoke about his injury struggles and the influence of Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini among other topics.

Gosens joined Inter during the January transfer window, and while he’s yet to really show the full range of his abilities he has already integrated well into the team.

The German has the chance to win the Scudetto in his first season with the Nerazzurri, and he feels that it is already within reach for he and his teammates.

“I can tell you this,” he said of the win over Juventus, “that win will bring us the Scudetto. Before the match we had been saying, ‘If we win, we’ll be champions’. And that’s how it will be, I’m totally convinced.”

Regarding not having his Number 8 shirt from Atalanta, the German explained that “Unfortunately I have a new number because 8 is on the back of Vecino, a player who has been at the club for a long time.”

“I didn’t want to insist on having it,” he continued, “I always find it stupid to come to a new club and immediately ask for a certain number.”

“But since 8 is the number that has been with me throughout my career, I wanted at least 18,” he went on.

He elaborated that “I was attracted to 8 when I was playing at Vitesse, that’s why it’s the number with which I have the greatest emotional connection. I’m not superstitious.”

On the influence that La Dea coach Gian Piero Gasperini had on him, Gosens stated that “I will be eternally grateful to him, at Atalanta we always played with an attacking system that heavily involved the wingbacks in attack.”

“I scored so many goals simply because I had the freedom to make that run to the far post,” he added. “He’s a genius when it comes to putting a team together, I learned a lot from him.”

“We didn’t necessarily have a world-class relationship, especially in the early days,” Gosens went on. “He told me that he’d never coached a player who had taken such a step forward and improved so much.”

“He also told me that Inter was the right move for me at the moment,” he added of his former coach. “In the end it was an excellent transfer, I said farewell to him with great affection.”

Regarding his long injury layoff earlier this year, Gosens said that “Maybe it’s something that’s made me stronger as a player and a person.”

Of his career the 27-year-old said that “I see it as a great journey, in which we get to know ourselves better and find others to fit with.”

“I could have stayed in Bergamo, I would have always played there,” he continued. “But Inter was a unique opportunity.”

“Now I find myself facing competition for my position again,” he added, “in this case Perisic, who’s having a great season and has already won everything. But I’m absolutely convinced that this challenge will help me in some way.”

“It’s crazy that I’m able to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world,” he said of being at Inter, “especially after an injury.”

“It’s really fun here, Inter have a great team, an incredible desire to always win,” he reflected. “Of course there’s also the pressure of having to win every game. But that’s what matters, that’s what makes it fantastic.”
