Borussia Monchengladbach defender Mathias Ginter is set to join Freiburg on a free transfer this summer, meaning Inter will miss out on him.

This according to German broadcaster Sport1, who report that the 28-year-old is set to return to his former club during the summer transfer window and that a deal could be announced in the coming days.

Ginter had been widely reported as a target for the Nerazzurri this summer, as he could potentially bolster their defensive options without a transfer fee.

The likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona had also been rivalling them for the German’s signature, after he confirmed in January that he would not be signing a contract extension with Gladbach and would be available for free.

However, Ginter now looks set to join Freiburg instead, and should complete he medical in the next few days, and so the Nerazzurri’s interest in him will not come to anything.
