Legendary former Inter midfielder Nicola Berti feels that coach Simone Inzaghi has exceeded expectations in his first season in charge at the Nerazzurri.
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera in an interview published in today’s print edition, Berti gave the view that the coach has performed better than expected at the start of the season and also suggested that while AC Milan are title favourites, their trip to Verona could see them slip up.
Inzaghi arrived with a difficult task of replacing Scudetto-winner Antonio Conte after his predecessor’s abrupt departure at the end of last season, and doing so while the team adhered to strict budgetary restrictions.
The campaign has not been without its hiccups, with the damaging Serie A loss to Bologna last week only the latest, but on the whole it has been highly encouraging and sees the team in the hunt for trophies at the climax of the season.
Inzaghi has arguably already done what was set out for him by the club by securing a top four spot in Serie A and reaching the round of sixteen of the Champions League, and Berti feels that what he’s done has been enough.
Berti argued that “Inzaghi’s performed beyond expectations, he doesn’t have Lukaku and Hakimi, but he’s done well to get the best out of the whole squad.”
Of midfielder Nicolo Barella, he said that “He and Marcelo Brozovic would be on the podium of midfielders in all of Europe.”
Regarding the title race, Berti predicted “Let’s say that Milan are favourites, but on Sunday they visit fatal Verona. Milan can afford to draw a match, but then they also have Atalanta to come. It will be a real fight.”
