Former Serie A referee Paolo Casarin has said that both penalty decisions in favour of Inter against Juventus were correct, according to a report in the Italian print media today.
Speaking during an interview with Corriere della Sera, Paolo Casarin revealed that Paolo Valeri had made the right call for both penalties in the Coppa Italia final with the help of the Video Assistant Referee.
There was a lot of controversy following Inter’s 4-2 extra time win over the Bianconeri on Wednesday night.
The Nerazzurri were awarded a penalty with 10 minutes to go of the regulation 90 when Lautaro Martinez was brought down by both Matthijs de Ligt and Leonardo Bonucci at the same time.
“Referee Valeri has a lot of work to do. In the 79th minute Bonucci and De Ligt on Lautaro who ended up on the ground. From Valeri’s position, in the area, it’s a penalty. The Var also confirms.”
That penalty levelled up the game and took it to extra time. That is when Stefan de Vrij is brought down by Matthijs de Ligt and after a VAR review, Inter are awarded the penalty that got them back in the lead.
“After 8 minutes De Ligt’s foul on De Vrij in the box that Valeri doesn’t catch: the Var system calls him back and it’s a penalty. Right decision”.
