Inter are thinking of trying to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji on a free transfer next summer.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the Nerazzurri are lukewarm on signing the 26-year-old this summer and that he is second-choice to Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic but that their interest could pick up when he is available out of contract.

Akanji’s current deal with Dortmund is set to expire at the end of June 2023, but the Schwarzgelben look to be hoping to offload him during the summer transfer window and avoid losing him on a free transfer.

The Swiss international is on Inter’s radar as a defender to sign alongside Torino’s Bremer, but in this respect Milenkovic is still their priority target.

However, should Akanji not leave Dortmund this summer and instead play out the final remaining season on his contract and then leave for free next summer, Inter are thinking of securing his signature then, as they did with Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana.
