Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that the failure to sign Torino defender Bremer ahead of Juventus is a consequence of the tight finances at the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, Bergomi gave his thoughts on the transfer market disappointment and blamed the financial disparity in the deal rather than Inter’s directors for failing to land the Brazilian.

Inter had been pursuing Bremer for what felt like an eternity, and their strategy had been to form a strong personal agreement with the player which would allow them to sign him for much less than Torino had valued him at.

This appeared to be working according to plan as the 25-year-old rejected other offers and made clear that he wanted to wear the Nerazzurri next season.

However, in the end the sale of Matthijs de Ligt to Bayern Munich for a gargantuan fee meant that the Bianconeri were flush with cash which they were able to use to convince both Torino and the player, hijacking a deal which the Nerazzurri had felt they had in hand for months.

Bregomi stated that their should be “No regrets. For two years the Inter directors have been working miracles without financial resources, it was impossible to compete with the sums that were being offered by Juventus.”

“Then, moving on to the technical aspect, for me Bremer was not a real replacement for Skriniar,” he continued, “to play on the right side of a back three he would have had to adapt a bit, learn the role, just like Milan did.”

“On the contrary, it would have been a sensational signing if he had come to play in the centre of the back three, keeping Skriniar next to him,” Bergomi went on. “I don’t think there was ever a real possibility of that happening though.”

He then stated that “Skriniar should never be put up for sale because of what he represents, because he’s an example for the whole club. He has Inter in his heart.”
