Former Inter and current Roma coach Jose Mourinho believes that the European Treble won by the Nerazzurri during the 2009-10 season was one of the special moments within Italian football history.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, Mourinho spoke about the connection that he still has with Inter after having guided the club to their dominant triumph during that season.

Mourinho has had more than a decade of ups and downs since leaving Inter on a high at the end of the 2009-10 campaign, coaching Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur before returning to Italy to take charge of Roma at the start of last season.

Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri have had plenty of ups and downs of their own, and in the past two seasons have won the Serie A title for the first time since Mourinho left as well as the Coppa Italia, coming after a difficult period in their history.

Inter and Mourinho shared a particularly memorable and historic period in each others’ respective legacies, however, and the Portuguese coach still feels that the connection remains special despite the time that they’ve been apart.

“Italy is a country which has written many chapters in the history of football,” the coach said, “which has won the World Cup several times, and in which there are teams like Juventus, Milan, Inter.”

“And ours was the team that achieved something that was important in the history of Italian football,” he continued. “I think we’re considered, not just me, but all the players in that team, to be icons.”

He continued that “The special thing was the emotional bond that existed between all of us. The players were truly friends, perhaps they could even be called brothers.”

“People can say what they want, but the Champions League is like the Eldorado of football,” he added. “At that time, Inter were the strongest team in Italy.”

Mourinho recalled that “I remember it perfectly and I know when it all started. It started during the previous season, when we were eliminated from the Champions League in Manchester.”

“That same evening I had a meeting with the President and I said: ‘With what we have today we will win the title, the next one, and the one after, but to win the Champions League we need something more,'” he recalled

“Step by step, we began to outline our future and began to discuss the profiles of the players we would need,” he explained.

Mourinho looked back on “Three trophies in fifteen days, Rreble history and four goals from Milito in three games.”

“I think matches like that must be won by a family,” he stated. “We have achieved something unique in Italian football that obviously left me with an eternal bond with that country, an eternal bond with that club and also a relationship between me and the players which is very difficult to describe.”
