Young Lecce midfielder Joel Voelkerling Persson has a personal motivation to try and do well against Inter on the opening game of the Serie A season.

Speaking during his unveiling as a Lecce midfielder after his transfer from Roma’s youth academy, as reported by FCInterNews, the young Swede noted that by coincidence he comes up against the team who he lost to at Primavera level in the Under-19 championship final in his first Serie A match with the Apulians.

Inter won the Under-19 championship by beating Roma in the final, with the Nerazzurri and the Giallorossi each having boasted strong youth squads going into the match.

Persson had to settle for a runners-up medal in that competition, but he will already have his chance for revenge by trying to deal Inter a shock blow on their Serie A opener by getting a result with newly-promoted Lecce.

“Last season I lost the final of the Primavera championship against Inter, and now I come up against the Nerrazzurri right away in the first Serie A match,” he noted of the schedule. “I hope this time I can be successful.”
